Mental Health Matters Cape Town TV<br />In this episode Lenina Rassool speaks with Tracey-Lee Kotzen CEO of Wellness Initiative about the mental health state of frontline workers.<br /><br />A lot of frontline workers experience vicarious trauma, which is an emotional residue caused by exposure to traumatic stories and experiences of others through their work, such as: witnessing fear, pain, terror that others have experienced and horrific stories these professionals are told.<br /><br />In response to this, Mental Wellness Initiative developed a capacity building programme for frontline workers in the social justice sector, focusing on mental health and wellness. The programme tackles stigma associated with mental health, it provides a safe space for frontline workers and empowers them with tools for trauma healing and recovery, further cultivating leadership skills in a trauma informed environment and improve resilience.

Trauma and trauma response<br /><br />We have been asking wrong questions says @Nomfundo Mogapi! <br /><br />With the escalating rate of violence and sexual based violence in South Africa, the question we should be asking is what happened to you? <br /><br />As a nation, we have a lot of unresolved trauma and until we heal we will see a perpetuation and increase in the aftermath of trauma.<br /><br />Trauma is stored in the amygdala, a region of the brain that is primarily associated with emotional processing. When healing has not taken place, any trigger catalysis a flight, fight or freeze response. <br /><br />Recent stats show that there has been a 95% increase in suicides in South Africa and this is a result in a trauma freeze response.<br /> <br />Perhaps this is a good time to dig a bit deeper and ask the hard question, "what happened to us?"<br /><br />@Centre for Mental Wellness and Leadership <br />@Oprah Winfrey <br />@Old Mutual SA

In celebrating Father’s Day, SAPS in Bronville, Welkom, in collaboration with key stakeholders and agents in the #GBV space, hosted an exciting Father and Son event. Men that have succeeded in life without their biological fathers shared their inspiring stories, encouraging young boys without fathers, that they too can make better choices and achieve their goals.
